Data Privacy Policy

This document principally relates to the second phase of the study (smartphone study).

1. Implementation and Adherence to this Data Privacy Policy

We, the Transports Publics Genevois (TPG), provide you with a smartphone application (hereafter, “the app”) within the scope of the second phase of the study titled Enquête Origine Destination Transports Publics (hereafter, “Enquête OD TP” or “the study”). TPG conducts the study together with several transport authorities and transport providers of Greater Geneva (see 3 Partners of the Study). The goal of the study is to understand mobility behaviour in Greater Geneva to enable public transport planning. The app allows us to record and analyse the mobility behaviours of its users. Your data privacy is of the utmost importance to us. Therefore, this document provides information related to your data privacy rights.

Please read the data privacy policy carefully before agreeing to participate in the study and before starting to use the app. By agreeing to participate in the study and by activating the app, you consent to the collection, processing, and use of your data in accordance with this data privacy policy.

2. Goal of the Study and Purpose of Data Collection

The goal of the study is to understand mobility behaviour in Greater Geneva to enable public transport planning and to improve public transport services. Traditional methods of data collection, such as travel diaries and questionnaires, are limited in incorporating the increasingly dynamic and diversified reality of mobility behaviour in an accurate manner. Therefore, we use a smartphone app in the second phase of the study to to gain a better understanding of the mobility behaviour of public transport users in Greater Geneva.

3. Partners of the Study

TPG conducts the study together with several transport authorities and transport providers of Greater Geneva (hereafter, “the partners”):

  • The Office Cantonal des Transports (OCT) of the Canton of Geneva;
  • The General Directorate of Mobility and Roads (DGMR) of the Canton of Vaud;
  • The Nyon region (VD);
  • Annemasse - les Voirons Agglomération;
  • The transports public genevois (tpg)
  • The Groupement Local de Coopération Transfrontalière (G.L.C.T) des Transports Publics Transfrontaliers;
  • Noctambus Association;
  • The Compagnie du chemin de fer Nyon-St-Cergue-Morez SA (NStCM);
  • The Transports publics de la Région Nyonnaise SA (TPN);
  • TP2A;
  •  Lémanis SA.

4. Data Collection Methods

We collect data in two phases. In the first phase of this study, we collect data via an online questionnaire. In the second phase of this study, we collect data via a smartphone app. The goal of this document is to describe data privacy policy with regards to the second phase of this study.

In the second phase of this study, data on the mobility behaviour of public transport users will be collected using a smartphone app that is supplied by the company Motiontag. The collected data will be used to automatically identify trips with the different transport modes.

5 Scope of Collected Data

The following data is collected via the app:

  • Data to create and activate a user account:
    • E-mail address and password
    • Pseudonyms UUID (alphanumeric identifier)
    • Time of creation / activation of the user account
  • Data for automatic means of transport recognition and route detection:
    • Time of localization
    • Geo-coordinates and accuracy (determined by GPS chip)
    • Acceleration values (determined via sensors in the smartphone)
    • Gyro sensor/gyroscope values (determined via sensors in the smartphone)
    • Barometer/air pressure data (determined via sensors in the smartphone)
    • Magnetometer (determined via sensors in the smartphone)
  • Data for customer service purposes and maintenance:
    • Device ID (alphanumeric identifier assigned by AN).
    • Manufacturer and model of the mobile device
    • Version of the operating system installed on the mobile device
    • Version of the app
    • Type of data connection (WLAN / mobile data / none)
    • Status of the battery optimization for the app that is effective on the mobile device
    • Configuration of the energy saving mode of the mobile device
    • Battery charge status of the mobile device
    • Charging status of the mobile device
    • Error messages
    • Crash reports

6. Data Processing

All collected data will be pseudonymized, aggregated and statistically analysed. Of special interest to public transport planning (and hence to data processing) are the aggregated trips conducted with public transport in terms of their start stops and destination stops. This information later allows the optimization of the current public transport network.

7. Data Storage

The app locally stores collected data on mobility behaviour and the participant number. The data is stored on secure servers with the company providing the app (Motiontag) as well as on secure servers within TPG.
For data visualization and analysis, pseudonymized data will be shared with the company Mobil’Homme and the company providing the visualization platform (Wever).

Results will be disseminated only in aggregate manner, which eliminates the possibility of identifying individuals.
