A little history
The park is named after the photographer-explorer Alfred Bertrand. His family acquired the estate in the 19th century and his widow donated it to the City of Geneva in 1940.
The property dates back to the 17th century. Champel was then outside the city walls, a sinister countryside where political opponents were executed and "witches" were burned.
At the end of the 18th century, the neighborhood became more upscale as wealthy families moved in.
