Evening Concert No. 4: Dés-espoir
Conducted by GERGELY MADARAS
"Two sublime pieces will be played tonight: Ludwig van Beethoven's monumental 3rd Symphony, "Eroica Symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man" and Richard Strauss's Metamorphoses, one of whose six themes is a quotation from the "Funeral March" from the Symphony’s 2nd movement (Strauss also quotes the famous four initial notes of the 5th Symphony). Both works were completed in moments of intense emotion. Beethoven was immensely disappointed to see General Bonaparte, the defender of the ideals of the French Revolution, become Emperor Napoleon I. For his part, Strauss was anguished to see the devastation of Germany at the end of the Second World War, especially after the destruction of his beloved Munich Opera House. Twenty-three string instruments, all soloists, meditate throughout Strauss's work, while the Beethovenian orchestra ignites the discourse throughout the "Eroica" Symphony. Simply stunning!" source: OCG
